A coding assistant that shipped as a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin and a CLI, and produced 827 releases between 2024 and 2026. Cursor acquired the company in June 2026 — version 2.0.0 was the last release, the repository is read-only, and the site is a static archive.

Who built itContinue was built by two founders: Ty Dunn, a group product manager at the open-source conversational AI company Rasa before he started it, and Nate Sesti, who wrote the repository’s first commit, `copying from old repo`, on 24 May 2023. They founded the company in June 2023 in the Y Combinator summer batch and raised roughly $5M in total — $2.1M led by Heavybit in 2023 and $3M in SAFE notes in 2025 — against 507 contributors and 36,050 stars. Cursor acquired the company in June 2026, after which the repository became read-only.

   An old repository, copied into a new one

   The continuedev organisation was created on 14 March 2023 and the repository followed on 24 May 2023. Its first commit, by Nate Sesti, is called “copying from old repo”. Ty Dunn (CEO) and Nate Sesti (CTO) founded the company the next month, in the Y Combinator summer 2023 batch.

   Show HN, and a $2.1M round

   The first public discussion was a Show HN on 26 July 2023 titled “Continue – Open-source coding autopilot”, which took 298 points and 103 comments; a second Show HN on 24 August 2023 pitched Code Llama as a drop-in replacement for Copilot Chat and took 187 points. On 14 November 2023 the company announced a $2.1M round led by Jesse Robbins of Heavybit, with angel investment from Hugging Face co-founder Julien Chaumond, Rosebud AI founder Lisha Li and Mesosphere co-founder Florian Leibert.

   827 releases across three clients

   GitHub records 827 releases: 371 with no suffix, 353 tagged -vscode and 103 tagged -jetbrains, of which 539 are pre-releases and 288 stable. The earliest is v0.0.38-jetbrains on 15 March 2024; the busiest year was 2025, with 532 releases. TechCrunch reported a further $3M in SAFE notes led by Heavybit on 26 February 2025, and a Launch HN on 27 March 2025 took 178 points and 110 comments.

   The product line turns toward CI checks

   On 4 September 2025 the organisation created continuedev/instinct, described as a Next Edit model built by Continue; that repository is now archived. Blog posts from 21 July 2025 to 6 March 2026 were about AI code-quality checks and intervention rates, and in March 2026 the organisation added continuedev/continue-fork and continuedev/checks, the latter described as code quality standards that run as full AI agents on pull requests. A Show HN in February 2026 pitched source-controlled AI checks enforceable in CI, and took 44 points.

   Acquired by Cursor

   The homepage announcement “Continue has been acquired by Cursor” is present in the Internet Archive snapshot of 15 June 2026 and absent from the snapshot of 14 June 2026. The final version, v2.0.0-vscode on 19 June 2026, removed anonymous telemetry, retired the sign-in flow and fixed bugs, and the README now points JetBrains users at the CLI. Billing stopped after the acquisition, user data could be exported until 15 July 2026, and the FAQ says all user data has since been deleted.

   Read-only

   The README states that the repository “is no longer actively maintained and is read-only for all users”. The last commit on main is from 21 July 2026 and removes the sign-in link; the pushed_at timestamp of 27 September 2026 belongs to the cla-signatures branch, not to code. GitHub still reports archived as false; this record treats the repository as archived because it accepts no further work. At the collection date it held 36,050 stars, 5,430 forks, 507 contributors and 843 open issues, against the 34,300 stars and 4,800 forks reported when Cursor acquired it.
