OpenHands

A general-purpose software engineering agent: give it a task and it reads the code, edits files and runs commands. It is a framework rather than a completion tool, and its central claim is model independence — you bring your own API key instead of being locked to one vendor. Commercial cloud and enterprise products sit alongside the MIT-licensed core.

Who built itOpenHands was started in March 2024 by Binyuan Hui and Junyang Lin, both members of the Qwen team at Alibaba; the company built around it, All Hands AI, was founded in July 2024 by Graham Neubig, Xingyao Wang and Robert Brennan — a different set of people. Neubig is a Carnegie Mellon professor, Wang was a UIUC doctoral student, and Brennan’s earlier work was product and engineering at Fairwinds. That split is why the record separates the project’s origin from its founding story.

   Started as OpenDevin, named after the thing it was reacting to

   The project began on 12 March 2024 as OpenDevin, an explicit homage to Cognition’s Devin, which is what prompted it. The first two contributors — Binyuan Hui and Junyang Lin — are members of the Qwen team. Graham Neubig, Robert Brennan and Xingyao Wang joined soon after and went on to found All Hands AI; the project was renamed OpenHands at around that point.

   The unusual part of the origin

   The people who started the project and the people who founded the company around it are not the same group. That distinction is easy to flatten into a single founding story, and flattening it would credit the wrong people.

   From “open Devin” to an open standard

   ~21 months from first commit to 89k stars

   The rename marked a shift from being an alternative to a specific product to having its own position. By 2025 the framing on the site was an open standard for autonomous software development, with a cloud product, an enterprise tier and a multi-agent workspace. A year after launch the project reported 50,000 stars and 250 contributors; by September 2026 it was at 89,301 stars and 565 contributors.

• Renaming away from “the open version of X” is a claim of independence, and it usually arrives with a company.
• Open source as the distribution layer for an enterprise product is now a well-worn path — the differentiator has to be something else, here model independence.
