Who built itYasser Elsaid is Chatbase’s sole founder and remains its CEO; he started the product as a university student in Canada and was the company’s only employee until June 2023. It has taken no venture capital — Stripe’s case study on it is titled “Bootstrapped startup” — and reached $10 million in ARR with 26 employees by March 2026. He has said the launch was one tweet to 16 followers in February 2023, and that it cost him two classes.

   Being early was the entire moat

   In early 2023 the technique was easy and the demand was enormous. Speed of arrival mattered more than quality of implementation.

   Then doing the unglamorous part

   Retention came from handling weird PDFs, long documents and billing properly — none of which is interesting to demo and all of which is what customers pay for.
